Early Years and Education of Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla was born into a Serbian family as the fourth child of Milutin Tesla, a priest, and his wife Georgina. His birthplace was the village of Smiljan, located in the historical region of Lika within the Austrian Empire. Tesla spent his early childhood in Smiljan before his family relocated to the town of Gospić in 1862. There, he received his primary education and completed the lower real gymnasium. Continuing his studies, Tesla enrolled in the higher real school in Karlovac, where he lived with his father’s cousin during his time at the institution. Upon finishing his education at the school, he obtained his maturity certificate. Initially, Tesla’s family intended for him to pursue a career in the priesthood. However, after contracting cholera during an epidemic and spending nearly nine months bedridden, his father promised to allow him to study engineering if he recovered. Following his recovery, Tesla was hidden by relatives in the mountains to avoid military conscription, returning from this refuge in 1875.

Higher Education and the Beginning of His Career

Nikola Tesla began his higher education in 1875 when he enrolled at the Technical College in Graz, where he studied electrical engineering. Following his time at the college, Tesla took up a position as a teacher at a secondary school in Gospić. This teaching role, however, provided him with only a modest income. In January 1880, with assistance from his relatives, Tesla moved to Prague and enrolled at Charles University. His studies there were brief, lasting only one semester. Subsequently, Tesla embarked on his professional career as an electrical engineer, first working for the government telegraph company in Budapest. He later joined the Continental Edison Company in Paris. During his tenure in Budapest and Paris, Tesla actively pursued the development of a model for an asynchronous electric motor, marking the beginning of his significant contributions to electrical engineering.

Relocation to the United States and Scientific Legacy

Nikola Tesla relocated to the United States in 1884, marking the beginning of a prolific period in his inventive career. In America, Tesla fully developed his work as a physicist, engineer, and inventor specialising in radio engineering and electrical engineering. His contributions to the creation of alternating current devices, electric motors, and polyphase systems earned him widespread recognition and numerous patents. Tesla’s inventions played a crucial role in enabling the second phase of the Industrial Revolution, fundamentally transforming electrical power generation and distribution.
