Biological diversity, or biodiversity, refers to the variety of life in all its forms and the ecological complexes they inhabit. It is a key concept in environmental conservation and is studied primarily by biology and ecology, along with related sciences.

Australia plays an active role in global biodiversity conservation, having ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity and its supplementary protocols. The country protects its unique biodiversity through national legislation and is home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites recognised for their outstanding biological diversity.

Date and Establishment of the Celebration

International Biodiversity Day is observed annually on 22 May. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in the year 2000 to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Initially, the celebration took place on 29 December, but the date was later changed to 22 May to avoid difficulties in planning related events. The choice of 22 May is significant as it marks the day when the agreed text of the Convention was adopted by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee during the Nairobi conference in 1992. Each year, a new theme is selected for International Biodiversity Day to highlight different aspects of biodiversity and its importance.

Australia’s Role in Biodiversity Conservation

Australia plays a significant role in the global effort to conserve biodiversity, demonstrated by its commitment to international agreements and robust domestic legislation. The country ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity on 27 November 1993, marking its dedication to the protection and sustainable use of biological resources. Further reinforcing this commitment, Australia became a party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety on 21 May 2002, which addresses the safe handling and transfer of living modified organisms. Additionally, Australia ratified the Nagoya Protocol on 10 June 2013, focusing on access to genetic resources and the fair sharing of benefits arising from their utilisation.

Domestically, Australia enforces the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, a key legislative framework aimed at safeguarding its unique biodiversity. The country is renowned for its rich biological diversity, with over 1.8 million described species, approximately 84 percent of which are endemic, highlighting the distinctiveness of its flora and fauna. This exceptional biodiversity is internationally recognised through six UNESCO World Heritage sites within Australia, celebrated for their outstanding natural values, including the Great Barrier Reef, one of the most iconic ecosystems globally.

Through these international commitments and national measures, Australia actively contributes to the preservation of biodiversity, underscoring its vital role in global conservation efforts.

The term “biodiversity” has a historical origin that dates back to the late 19th century. It is believed that the first use of the term was by G. Bates in 1892. This early application marks the beginning of the concept’s development, which would later become central to discussions about the variety and variability of life on Earth. Understanding the origin of the term provides valuable context for its evolution and the increasing importance it has gained in scientific and environmental discourse.

Scientific Disciplines Studying Biodiversity

The study of biodiversity is primarily conducted within the fields of biology and ecology. These core scientific disciplines focus on understanding the variety and variability of life forms on Earth, examining the relationships among organisms and their environments. In addition to biology and ecology, related sciences also contribute to the investigation of biodiversity, providing complementary perspectives and methodologies that enhance the overall comprehension of biological diversity. Together, these disciplines form the foundation for scientific inquiry into the complexity and richness of life, which is essential for informed conservation and sustainable management efforts.

Convention on Biological Diversity and Protocols

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was adopted on 5 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, marking a significant milestone in global efforts to conserve biodiversity. Within a week of its adoption, 145 countries signed the Convention, demonstrating widespread international commitment. The Convention officially entered into force on 29 December 1993 and currently has 168 signatures. Its primary objectives are the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilisation of genetic resources.

To complement the CBD, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety was adopted in January 2000. This protocol focuses on the safe handling, transport, and use of living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology, ensuring biosafety in accordance with the Convention’s goals. The Cartagena Protocol came into effect between 2003 and 2004.

Further advancing the aims of the CBD, the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits was adopted on 29 October 2010. This protocol establishes a legal framework to regulate access to genetic resources and ensure that benefits derived from their utilisation are shared fairly. The Nagoya Protocol entered into force on 12 October 2014 after receiving 50 ratifications. Together, these instruments form a comprehensive legal foundation for global biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
