The first formal description of the Tasmanian tiger was published in 1808 by the amateur naturalist George Harris. Despite its name, scientific studies have shown that the Tasmanian tiger was incapable of preying on sheep due to its relatively weak jaws. However, the active colonisation of Australia and the widespread introduction of sheep farming led to the mass extermination of this species. By the 1860s, the population of Tasmanian tigers had drastically declined. Unfortunately, even at critically low numbers, the species was not granted protected status. The last known wild Tasmanian tiger was killed on 13 May 1930, and the final individual in captivity died on 7 September 1936. Today, the Tasmanian tiger remains a poignant symbol of extinction and the irreversible consequences of human impact on native wildlife.

Causes and Scale of Species Extinction

Since the colonisation of Australia, the country has witnessed the extinction of 10% of its 320 species of terrestrial mammals.
